Joining us in Jacó, all the way from Switzerland, Fabian sought an immersive cultural experience to kick off his four-month solo adventure through Central and South America. He wanted to experience the diversity and culture of the people of Costa Rica first-hand while soaking up the breathtaking nature and Pura Vida spirit. With just a backpack and an open mind, he did just that through our Homestay program!
Did you know that we offer a Homestay program? It’s the perfect option for students who wish to experience life with a local family. Read all about Fabian’s experience!
SOTW: Tell us about your choice to do a homestay. Did you have any prior Spanish language proficiency?
Fabian: No, I didn’t know much Spanish before coming on this adventure, but I opted for a homestay anyway. I knew it was the best way to learn Spanish intensively for my trip throughout Central and South America and to immerse myself directly in a new culture.
I believe that travel educates, and nothing consolidates a language like direct interaction with native speakers.
SOTW: That’s so brave of you! How long was your homestay, and did you see an improvement in your Spanish speaking abilities?
Fabian: I stayed for four weeks and am more than satisfied with my development! In everyday life with my host family, I was not only able to practice vocabulary and grammar, but also learn idioms and regional expressions, without any previous knowledge. At the same time, I gained a deep insight into the local way of life, traditions, and values.
I found that I can communicate with the locals quite well. It was a real cultural immersion that goes far beyond what you can see in a language course or travel guide.
SOTW: Wow, impressive, and we agree – spending time with locals and immersing yourself in the Costa Rican culture is the best way to learn the Spanish language.
In addition to the time you spent with your host family, tell us about the other students from the School of the World you met.
Fabian: The other students I met at the school were from all around the world! There were students from Canada, the USA, Germany, and other parts of Europe.
Despite our different backgrounds, we had a lot in common and spent time outside our classes hanging out, playing cards, and going to the bars. On the weekends, we even organized excursions in a rental car to discover the untouched nature of Costa Rica. One highlight was the Nauyaca waterfall, about two hours away, which we all enthusiastically climbed, and a sight we will remember for a long time.
SOTW: You also tried surfing for the first time, right? What was that experience like?
Fabian: At first, I just wanted to “give it a try” and see if surfing was even something for me. Three weeks later, I was standing on the board all by myself — and I could hardly believe it!
Jacó was the perfect place to start my surfing journey. The waves there are just right: not too high, not too wild.
I also owe it all to the amazing people at SOTW. Right from the start, the surf instructors had my back — super friendly, incredibly patient, and always with a big smile. It didn’t matter if I fell off the board (which happened a lot in the beginning) or missed the perfect wave; they never lost their motivation, and because of that, neither did I!
After three weeks, I could surf on my own, without a coach having to swim next to me — such an incredible feeling! I never thought I would make that much progress so quickly. And the best part: it was so much fun!
SOTW: Congrats on learning to surf! We love hearing about how our students fall in love with the sport and how our program and instructors help teach them.
You said Jacó was the best place to learn how to surf. How does it compare to the other places you’ve traveled to?
Fabian: Costa Rica, especially Jacó, has found a very special place in my heart compared to many other places I have traveled to. The diversity of the landscape is simply impressive, from dense rainforests to breathtaking waterfalls and species-rich national parks. Nature is omnipresent here and seems almost magical.
It is an extremely hospitable country. The people in Costa Rica are incredibly warm and helpful. You can feel the “Pura Vida” attitude to life everywhere. It’s more than just a slogan; it’s a way of life. The beaches are beautiful, wild, and lively, and perfect for surfing and swimming. Jacó in particular is a hotspot for surfers, but also for anyone who just wants to relax and swim.
Overall, Costa Rica feels like a paradise – authentic, friendly, and full of natural beauty!
SOTW: We couldn’t agree more! Also, we think you should be a writer for the official Costa Rica travel and tourism guide! 😉Congrats on learning to surf! We love hearing about how our students fall in love with the sport and how our program and instructors help teach them.
Last question: What made School of the World a unique place to visit, and would you recommend it to others?
Fabian: Several things make School of the World special.
Third, you will experience a good mix of relaxation and learning. It was just right for me! I could really relax and enjoy the surroundings, while also feeling like I learned a lot of new things. This balance is what makes SOTW special.
So if you’re looking for an inspiring time with great people, a beautiful learning environment, and lots of positive energy, I can definitely recommend SOTW.
SOTW: Thanks, Fabian. We’re so glad you had a positive experience with our Homestay program. We love it when students make this choice. It’s the perfect blend of local culture while still getting to experience the magic of the school!
