Surf and Spanish in Costa Rica
Posted by Jack Albritton on October 22, 2014
Although it is quite common to find combination programs in 2014, School of the World was the first to offer surf and Spanish in Costa Rica. For the longest time San Jose, the capital city, was the dominant spot in Costa Rica when it came to Spanish schools but as more locations opened in the various beach towns around the country a marriage with surfing was bound to happen. Since 1999 many schools around the country have started offering surfing and Spanish programs. However, many are Spanish schools that arrange surf lessons or surf camps that offer Spanish as an afterthought. The School of the World Prides itself on the fact that both our Spanish school and surf camp stand alone. Equal importance is given to each program and the school only hires the best instructors for both.
Who wants to learn Spanish in Costa Rica?
Many people are simply not satisfied to go on vacation just to lounge by the pool or sit on the beach all day. Learning vacations have become extremely popular among active people who want to use their brains, their bodies or both while on vacation. These types of programs appeal to people of all ages and interests. There are many reasons for learning a second language and doing it on vacation appeals to a wide variety of people. Speaking a second language opens and enhances career opportunities. Some live in areas where there is a high Hispanic population or have plans to move to such an area. Some people just like to travel to Spanish speaking countries on vacation and want to be able to communicate a little better. Whatever the reason Costa Rica is a great place to learn.
Is learning to surf in Costa Rica for me?
Learning to surf in Costa Rica is for everyone, and I mean everyone! Beginner surfers come in all ages, shapes and sizes. I have seen children as young as 3 out there having a blast and seniors in their 80’s hooting and hollering after catching their first wave. No one should be scared or nervous about learning to surf as long as you have a qualified professional with you. This gives you a sense of safety as well as giving you instruction that will save you much time and frustration of trying to learn on your own. The waters in Costa Rica are warm and inviting with breaks to suit all surf levels. The instructors for School of the World’s surf camp are all qualified, patient and dedicated to making sure each student gets the most out of their surfing experience.
Great for couples or families with different interests.
Do you ever have the problem of getting your whole family, or just your significant othe,r to agree on what to do or where to go on vacation? This is the perfect solution! In addition to surfing and Spanish there is also digital photography, yoga and the recently added GoPro program. You can choose a combination of any two programs. If you are at the school for multiple weeks you can even switch up the programs you are taking. We host lots of couples where one comes to surf and the other to take Spanish or one of the other programs. After all these years the original combination of surf and Spanish is still the most popular.
Why go to Costa Rica for surfing and learning Spanish?
Learning Spanish in a Spanish speaking country is much more effective than learning in a sterile classroom setting in a location where you have little opportunity to practice what you learn. Costa Rica is the perfect place. The locals are friendly and are happy to speak with you and help when they see you are making an effort to learn their language. When you are surfing there are no shortage of practice situations sitting out in the lineup talking with the locals. There is consistent surf year round, especially on the central Pacific coast and there are beaches and breaks for every level of surfer.
