Jack Albritton

This is a short introduction to the narrator of the story at the School of the World Costa Rica.

Once Upon a Time, in the Land of Pura Vida

The new website will be launching soon and one of our chief objectives is to introduce you to the cast of characters that make up our family at School of the World Costa Rica.  We will be doing this through our blog and on our about us page.  I have already introduced you to Yoga Instructor Alejandra Torres and Photography/ Surf instructor Carlos Sanchez.  Before I go any further I guess I should tell you a little bit about myself and my role here at the school.  My official title, which I think is pretty unique, is Chief Storyteller.  I will be the narrator of the school and the adventures of our family and guests.  In short, my name is Jack and I tell the story.

My connection with the school began a little over 14 years ago.  School of the World, and Jaco in general, were much different places back then.  I had visited for a few months in 1998 and returned to live in September of 1999.  I was looking for a small place to live and a friend from my previous trip took me by the School of the World.  Back in those days owner Zach McDuffie rented out rooms to make ends meet in the off-season.  So I rented a room and proceeded to do pretty much nothing more than surf and lie in the hammock reading for the next several months.  Eventually Zach got tired of seeing me hanging around doing nothing and offered me a job.  That’s how I became the first program coordinator and began my association with the school that has lasted 14+ years.

I have seen a lot of changes and evolution since those days.  More classes have been added through the years to the original curriculum of Spanish, Culture, and Ecology.  Now you can choose between Spanish, Surfing, Yoga and Photography and GoPro.  I saw the acquisition of land, planning and construction of the main building of the school which was about the time the school made it to another level and began having a crowd year-round.  I was privileged to be friends with two of the best dogs I’ve ever known in my life, but that is a story for another time.  I worked with the school for several years before moving on to work on some projects of my own, yet I always stayed connected and consider a couple of the people at the school as some of my best friends in Costa Rica.

Fast forward a number of years and I found myself once again looking for new opportunities.  I was hired to do a little bit of this and a little bit of that, so it took us a bit of thinking to come up with the position of Chief Storyteller-  but that is really who I am in a nutshell.  I shoot video, I write, I take and share photos around the school and handle the social media.  When you add that all up the title just seems obvious.

Now that I have introduced myself I will do my best to give you an insight into the school and feel like you know us before you even visit.  To those of you that have visited before I hope that you will enjoy keeping up with what is going on around here.  Many of our guests return to School of the World at some point and many have become good friends over the years.  As the characters are introduced our sincere hope is that you will check in and follow the continuing story.  Who knows, maybe you will become part of the story yourself one day!  That is if you haven’t already.
