Winter is a Great Time for a Costa Rica Surf Camp
Posted by Jack Albritton on December 01, 2013
Temperatures are starting to drop and winter is approaching many parts of the world but here in Costa Rica we are on the cusp of our summer. There is nothing better than a Costa Rica surf camp to take those winter blues away and get a healthy dose of vitamin D. Playa Jaco is a great place to start. Located on the central Pacific coast, it is a short 1 ½ hour drive from Juan Santamaria Airport in San Jose. Whether you want to learn how to surf or are a seasoned surfer, a getaway might be just what the doctor ordered after the holiday season. A surf vacation in Costa Rica would make a great Christmas gift for yourself or a loved one.
Warm Temperatures and Blue Skies
There is barely a cloud in the sky in the Jaco area from late December to late April. The air temperature generally reaches highs in the 90’s during the days with the water in the high 70’s to low 80’s. Bask in the warm sun, lie on the beach and enjoy the scenery with that special someone, a group of friends or on your own. Just be sure to use plenty of sunscreen and avoid the peak sun during the middle of the day. The middle of the day, when the sun is strongest, is a good time to take a little siesta.
Costa Rica has the Perfect Wave for Everyone
The waves tend to be a little bit smaller this time of year which generally means beginners will catch on and enjoy lots of waves. This doesn’t mean this area is only for beginners. Advanced surfers will not be disappointed either as Playa Hermosa is just a 10 minute drive to the south. This is where the big boys surf and the wave can get quite heavy at times. The surf in the Jaco/ Hermosa area is some of the most consistent in the country and you can almost always find waves somewhere. A surf instructor or guide is great for making sure that you find the right wave for your surf level.
More than just Surf
While the surf is great there are many other things to see and do in this beautiful country. When not surfing you can get your thrills on an ATV charging up a mountain or flying through the trees on a zipline! Get up close and personal with huge crocodiles or watch monkeys scamper through the trees. There is so much to see and do that you will already be thinking about returning while you are still here. After a day in the jungle or on the beach enjoy a cool cocktail while watching the sunset to be followed up by a scrumptious dinner at one of the many wonderful restaurants in town. Try and work in a nap in the afternoon so you can check out the local nightlife.
There is nothing like the feel of getting on a plane in freezing temperatures and stepping off into a warm, tropical climate. It’s magical slipping into the warm waters of the Pacific knowing how cold it is back home. You can’t beat a little sun therapy in the form of a surf vacation to take away those winter blues. Warning, your friends and family are probably going to be jealous when you return home looking all tan and fit while they are pasty and pudgy after having been stuck indoors!
