Donavon Frankenreiter plays the Billabong Surf Fest in Jaco, Costa Rica

This past weekend Playa Jaco, Costa Rica played host to the Billabong Festival de Surf, which was a two day surf contest open to the public. The contest consisted of an Open Men’s Pro, Masters, Juniors, Groms, Women’s, Longboard and city of San Jose Open division. There were cash prizes for the Open Men’s Pro Division with gift and product prizes for the other divisions. The contest was in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Mango Surf Shop.
There was live music on the beach after the surfing was finished for the day on Saturday. Headlining the event was surfer/ musician Donavon Frankenreiter. Also playing was one of Costa Rica’s favorite reggae bands Ojo de Buey. Frankenreiter is no stranger to Costa Rica and has played in the Jaco/ Hermosa area multiple times throughout the years. As a surfer he grew up surfing in the San Clemente, California area. He has been sponsored by Billabong for many years and tends to pop up and play at many of their events around the world. While travelling in the North Shore of Hawaii he became friends with Jack Johnson some years back and actually put out his first album on Johnson’s Brushfire Records. His music reflects his surfing lifestyle; laidback, light and with a sense of adventure.
Frankenreiter was gracious enough to do a poster signing in the interim between the surf contest and his Saturday night gig on the beach. There was quite a crowd waiting at Mango Surf Shop to shake hands, get an autograph or be photographed with the iconic surfer. The surf fest brought out a great crowd for the weekend and there were plenty of full restaurants, bars and after parties in the night. There is always a great energy in Jaco when the town fills up for a surf contest, especially a big event like the Billabong Festival de Surf. The Jaco Municipalidad and the Jaco Police did a fantastic job controlling the event. Surfers Diego Naranjo and Lisbeth Vindas, along with Billabong, Jaco Blu and Mango Surf Shop were great organizing the events.
This was just one of many of the events that go on in Playa Jaco throughout the year. Even in the low season there are always things to do and things going on to provide a good time. The area is proud of its’ long history and surf culture and has a special good vibe when there is a surf event happening. The next big event will be the Jungle Jam in January of 2014. The lineup will feature such artists as Slightly Stoopid, Max Creek, the Expendables and G Love just to name a few. We will be talking about this event very soon and might just have a surprise or two for you. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter!
